Hi, friend! I’m Brittney. The “Davis” behind Brooks & Davis Photography and for as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved the feeling of being behind a camera, taking a deep breath, looking through that tiny glass, and freezing a moment in time. The energy and excitement of getting “THE SHOT” never eludes me. For someone with a terrible memory, *cough, cough* there’s a certain gift that photography gives me that is irreplaceable. I love the process more than anything. Getting in front of a camera is no easy task. Trust me, I know! I avoid it as much as possible. So, when I photograph people, I love getting to know the person in front of my lens, comforting them, and making them look and feel their best. I love this almost as much as I love tacos (yes, let it be known, your girl has an unhealthy obsession).
Looking back, I’ve always been into the arts but my passion for photography blossomed my freshmen year of High School. I was fortunate enough to have a school with an arts program and even more fortunate to have an AMAZING photography teacher. I don’t know about you, but I could have the coolest subject in the world, but if the teacher isn’t good, I don’t want to be there. She made me want to come to class and learn. I’m forever grateful for that.
While I can go on about my photographic background, and tell you all about why I picked up my first camera, or why you should choose me as your photographer, I don’t want it to be that type of post! Instead, I want to take this time for you to really get to know me, and have fun doing it. So, here’s a fast round of fun facts about me!
I’m 5’ 1.5” and I stretch that half! So, if you’re taller than me, which is most people, I’ll probably make a comment about how I feel SO short...even if it’s just by an inch.
I’m an early bird. Not too early though. All of my best thoughts and ideas come to me in the morning.
Speaking of the morning, I NEED my coffee to start the day. If you’re like me, you know what it’s like to try to function without that morning cup of Joe...not pretty! You know those post apocalyptic movies with the zombies mindlessly walking around the city looking for brains to feast on? Yeah, that’s pretty much me without my coffee.
I love to make people laugh. Even though most of the time, my jokes aren’t that funny.
I love to travel. There’s something about being submerged in other cultures that makes my heart skip a beat.
I have a puppy (5 years old) named Luna, and she is the light of my life. Yes, I know that technically she isn’t a puppy anymore, but shhh don’t tell her that. She’s got the energy of one, and the attitude of a princess. Sitting in her spot on the couch? Ha! Good luck.
I’m surrounded by love.
That’s the fun stuff. Now, to the deep, feelings. LOL. Hopefully, you’re baring with me through this read. I’m putting my heart on my sleeve, here!
They say it takes a village to raise a child. The same can be said for building a business. Support is the glue that holds it all together. I am so lucky to have such a great support system built of my parents, my two sisters, my boyfriend and my friends.
I’ve got to give credit where it’s due: My Mom and Dad. My journey could not be possible if not for them. I’ve got two of the most supportive, inspiring, and loving, parents in the world, who make me believe in long-lasting love. I'm fortunate enough to have parents who have been together and married for now, 29 years. WOW, right?!! *flashing APPLAUSE sign*
My Mom and Dad are the reason I love to capture love. I don’t know how many times I’ve gotten out the old leather bound photo album from the top of their closet and looked back at the pictures from their small little wedding held in my grandparents’ living room, surrounded by the most important people in their lives. Every time I do, I’m so thankful that someone was there, ready with a camera (because back then camera phones weren’t a thing), to capture the moment and freeze them in time for my sisters and I to gaze over and feel like we were there in that room, witnessing the love being shared. And even more so, I can’t wait until the day I get to show my future little ones those very same pictures while they sit in their grandparents' laps, holding both of their hands.
What we don’t realize a lot of the time when we are taking the picture is the impact it will have for generations, no matter how big or small the occasion.
I love that I get to create family heirlooms for generations to come. I love that I get to wake up everyday and do the thing I am most passionate about and bring joy into peoples’ lives. I LOVE that I get to proudly call myself a photographer.
So, when people ask me, “Why?” The answer is simple: To capture the moments that would otherwise be forgotten.
